Pilot flood protection measures to be rolled out in Crossmolina

Cathaoirleach open to special meeting on flooding

The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Holmes has said this week that he is open to the idea of the council having a special meeting to discuss the flooding problems in the county. However he said that a representative from a number of Government agencies would need to be present so questions could be answered.

Government decision due on 235 houses in Mayo without group water schemes – Mulherin

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Michelle Mulherin has confirmed that an announcement will be made in the coming weeks regarding 235 rural homes in Mayo which are without group water schemes. The residents of these homes have found themselves ineligible for funding for water infrastructure as a result of a change in funding guidelines and have been without a regular water supply for several years. This week Deputy Mulherin met with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin after having raised the issue again most recently in Dail Eireann last week with the Minister for Rural Affairs, Ann Phelan.

€2 million boost for Mary Robinson Centre

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week confirmed that the cabinet had approved €2 millon for the proposed Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina. The centre which will be built in Victoria House in Ballina, Mary Robinson’s birthplace on the banks of the River Moy, will be Ireland’s first Presidential Archive. Mayo County Council had provided an initial €1.5 million package to purchase the house and included the site next door and the construction of a new annex on the site

Mulranny improvement works opened

Michael Ring, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, and Cllr Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, officially opened the new Mulranny footpath and village enhancement scheme last Friday morning. The multi-million euro development consisted of 1.8 kilometres of improvements to the N59 comprising new footpaths, traffic calming, pavements, a viewing promenade, bicycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, picnic tables, and benches.

History of Bellacorick power station to be launched in Crossmolina

Powering the West - a History of Bord na Móna and ESB in North Mayo will be launched in the Town Hall, Crossmolina, this Friday evening (7pm) by retired UCD professor of archaeology Dr Seamus Caulfield. The 400 page, coffee-table style hard cover publication is a fascinating mix of personal stories and wonderful images of Erris. It is a history of the pioneering spirit of men who tamed and brought under control the “unmanageable” bogs of Erris and gave rise to huge employment in an immigration and unemployment blackspot.

Army on standby to assist in south Mayo

After making a passionate plea on Wednesday afternoon that the army be dispatched to help in areas of south Mayo which he described as "an absloute disaster zone" and where he said "people are living in fear." Cllr Damien Ryan confirmed to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday that he had been told by management in Mayo County Council "the army have been contacted and are mobilised and are ready to go and will be here in an hour if we need them."

Mulherin calls on council to review emergency plan following Crossmolina flooding

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin is calling on Mayo County Council to review its early warning and emergency response plan for Crossmolina following severe flooding in the town at the weekend when the River Deel burst its banks. Deputy Mulherin met locals whose business premises and homes were flooded  at the scene in Crossmolina.

Mayo man is Road Safety Officer of the Year

Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, has won the Road Safety Officer of the Year Award from the Irish road victims association. At a presentation to mark the occasion in Mullingar at the Global light of hope awards 2015, Mr Gibbons was honoured for his work promoting road safety in Mayo through creative and informative road safety campaigns, and his ongoing efforts to support and complement the work of the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána through road safety awareness campaigns.
